The Rotary Club of Buckhead Honors Dr. David Satcher with the Rev. Robert Ross Johnson Humanitarian of the Year Award

Created in 2000 in honor of its late member, The Rotary Club of Buckhead presents the “Rev. Robert Ross Johnson Humanitarian Award” annually to a non-Buckhead Rotarian who exemplifies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” and who has made a significant contribution to humanitarian efforts in the community.

On March 15, 2021 Dr. Satcher became the 21st recipient of this prestigious award. Dr. Satcher has earned countless honorary degrees and honors for his vast medical and educational accomplishments and the profound impact he has had on health and equity, practicing “Service Above Self” throughout his career.Rev. Robert Ross Johnson was founding pastor of the St. Albans Congregational Church in 1953, a position he held for almost 40 years until his retirement in 1990. Rev. Johnson was active in community affairs, education and as a prison chaplain. He founded the Human Relations Center of St. Albans and today it is known as the Robert Ross Johnson Family Life Center.  He was past president of the Jamaica New York Rotary Club, and after his retirement in 1990, he and his wife Ernestine moved to Atlanta.  In 1991, Rev. Johnson joined the Rotary Club of Buckhead and served as Chaplain.  After Rev. Johnson died in March of 2000, it was Pat Haly’s idea that led to the first Rev. Robert Ross Johnson Humanitarian of the Year Award, which was presented in December of 2000 to Rev. Johnson’s former associate pastor, Ambassador Andrew Young.Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, President and Dean, and Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, Founding Dean and Former President of the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) brought special greetings for this momentous occasion.  Members of both Rev. Johnson and Dr. Satcher’s families were in attendance, along with numerous Rotarians, and other MSM and Satcher Health Leadership Institute faculty and staff.Buckhead Rotary is one of the largest of the 21 Rotary Clubs in metro Atlanta. The members are business and professional leaders from the Buckhead and Atlanta business, government, nonprofit and educational communities.All Rotarians support the Rotary International Foundation which works worldwide on several causes including preventing disease; providing clean water; supporting education; growing local economies; saving mothers and children; and promoting peace.
