Health Policy Leadership Fellows meet with KFF staff as part of their Washington, D.C. health policy trip to hear briefings regarding Medicare & Medicaid, ACA Implementation, and HIV/AIDS.

SHLI and Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) co-convened experts and stakeholders from across the South to assess health and health equity in southern states on March 23, 2014 at the Morehouse School of Medicine.  SHLI and KFF co-authored an issue brief, Advancing Opportunities, Assessing Challenges: Key Themes from a Roundtable Discussion of Health Care and Health Equity in the South, released in June 2014.

On November 4, 2015, Kaiser Family Foundation and Satcher Health Leadership released a second co-authored brief, Beyond Health Care: The Role of Social Determinants in Promoting Health and Health Equity. This brings a critical lens to the challenges and opportunities for looking beyond the health care system to address social determinants of health, some of the most powerful drivers of both health and health equity.

Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center for Health Disparities Research

The Satcher Health Leadership Institute is leading a Health Policy Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center (TCC) for Health Disparities Research, with the unifying theme of a comprehensive and meaningful approach to the development, advancement, and implementation of health policies that harnesses the power of collaboration to bolster innovation, cost reduction, and health equity.

The Division of Health Policy leads one of four areas of research and discovery (TCC Subproject 4) – specifically looking at health policy training and the opportunities to identify and develop best practices for training health policy leaders prepared to inform policies to reduce health disparities and advance health equity.

Harry J. Heiman, MD, MPH, Director of the Division of Health Policy, represents the Satcher Health Leadership Institute through his appointment to the Southeastern Health Equity Council, one of ten regional health equity councils formed to achieve health equity in the U.S. as part of the HHS National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities.

In October, 2015, Brian McGregor, PhD was also appointed to the council, one of six representatives, together with Dr. Heiman, serving on the council for the state of Georgia.
