The Honorary Consul of Barbados At Atlanta, Dr. Edward Layne, in partnership with the Consulate General of Barbados in Miami and a number of Barbadian government officials, recently hosted the 4th biennial “Barbados Comes to Atlanta” (BCTA) event at the Marriott Marquis downtown from May 26th – May 29th, 2016. This event showcased Barbados business, investment opportunities, food and culture. In commemoration of Barbados’s upcoming 50th anniversary, the event intended to engage discussions around strategies for advancing sustainable development for the country across 4 sectors: education, medicine & healthcare, science and technology, and business. MSM, CDC, Georgia State and Georgia Tech were invited to submit healthcare models as apart of a competition for the BCTA event. SHLI, led by Drs. Gigi Bastien and Brian McGregor, submitted a proposal and presented a model for policy and practice reforms intended to support sustainable development in the nation’s healthcare system, with a focus on integrated care strategies to address non-communicable and lifestyle diseases. They also delivered an excellent presentation to event attendees representing key government officials, Atlanta business leaders, and members of the Barbadian diaspora from around the U.S. It was announced at the culminating black tie Gala event held on the evening of May 29th that SHLI won the healthcare model competition! Plans to continue to explore opportunities for on-going collaboration in implementing the proposed reforms are in motion.
